SHARP 09 Toronto

Just returned from a very enjoyable and thought-provoking SHARP09 in Toronto. In my paper at the panel on publishing in Africa, I used the Ashanti proverb ‘No on tests the depth of a river with both feet’ to introduce my discussion on the need for businesses to adapt their strategies in different markets and contexts.  I looked at the strategic options available to an international publisher such as OUP entering new markets, and argued that the organizational strategy OUP adopted in different African markets was determined by its assessment of the market, aspects of OUP’s organizational experience, and its need to manage risk in different contexts.
